The Wait and See Approach is Outdated!

Even today, it is still very common for (well meaning) doctors and family members to suggest to a concerned parent to ‘wait and see’.

Have you heard comments like, “Oh, your uncle didn’t talk until was 3, and HE’S fine.”

Or, “You just need to MAKE him talk (eat, walk, etc.).

Or, here's a favorite…“He’ll eat when he’s hungry.” 😯

Here’s my take on it, and before you say, “Oh, you’re just trying to drum up business, of COURSE you’re going to say you need therapy.” it’s just not true. I don’t need the business. Late talkers are just a small part of business. Kids with serious speech, language, or feeding difficulties will definitely get therapy.

But Late talkers are not talking for a reason…we may never know the reason…but many times I can determine the possible causes! A little low tone…people talking for them…hesitant personality…and many more. So, there’s that.

Ok, to get back to the topic…I have been a speech therapist for over 30 years, and I have seen so many parents who came in with their child at 3 years old, who now had significant speech and language delays, who later said…I wish I started earlier…

It’s just so sad and frustrating to think that the issues with learning words could have been eliminated or reduced if they had just started 6 months or a year earlier!

So, you have to ask yourself…does that ‘wait and see’ advice make me feel better or worse? Do I feel reassured or MORE anxious?

Trust your intuition (your Mommy Gut) if it whispers to you!!

Pro Tip: If you go home and start googling around for “how to get my toddler to talk”, then the advice you got is not what you were looking for.

Listen to your ‘mommy gut’ telling you…I need more help!

You are not alone, that’s the first thing to know. Ask any of the mom groups you’re in and you will quickly learn it’s very common, so hopefully that will help you decrease your anxiety and stress a little.

You know what else reduces the stress…TAKING ACTION! 😁

But by action I don’t mean more Google searches, Tik Toks, or IG. There’s PLENTY of Speech Therapists giving advice to you. They will tell you:

  • Just talk to them all day long!!! (that sounds exhausting~~And I’m a speech therapist!!)

  • Read more books (but you think “they won’t sit still for books, now what do I do?”)

Here’s the thing…

They don’t know you or YOUR child

  • Your child’s history (premature, difficulty feeding, colicky, ear infections)

  • your personality

  • your child’s personality (are they head strong, shy, active, quiet, hesitant)

  • what your schedule is like (do you have time for curated and adorable activities)

  • How your toys are set up (yes, it matters)

  • What KIND of toys you have and what YOUR kid’s interests are

So, if you’ve already done some searches and tried some things…

And that ISN’T working…

You and your child might need a little more support…AND THAT’S OK AND NORMAL!!🥰

Here’s what you might need instead of all that other noise…

  1. Just a little boost of specific, focused language strategies for you to use!

    1. Easy to understand

    2. Don’t need a specific TIME to do it…they can be used throughout the day

    3. Someone to tell you you’re doing it right! (that’s me 😉)

    4. 4 sessions, private or in a small group

    5. And then you’re off and running

This is my Tiny Talkers program…no one in this area is doing this!
